EirQuest - exploring the worlds of work and higher education

What is EirQuest?

EirQuest is a careers guidance programme designed for students planning to take the Irish Leaving Certificate. It is based on an interest questionnaire (online or paper-based). Guidance counsellors like EirQuest because it can be integrated into the school / college careers curriculum. Alternatively guidance counsellors can use it independently.

How does EirQuest work?

EirQuest analyses individual student responses and produces an Interest Profile based on over 40 broad career areas. In addition, it provides:

  • useful information for each student on the top key career areas
  • a personalised subject selection and availability chart
  • a facility for structured careers research
  • access to MyCareersRoom
  • a hard copy and online version of The Careers Directory for each student

EirQuest helps students to:

  • think carefully about their interests and to identify suitable career areas for further investigation
  • develop skills and carry out detailed research into specific careers
  • understand the likely demands careers will make on them
  • make informed decisions about their future
  • understand the relevance of subject choice in relation to their more likely careers and HE needs
  • develop a very useful online portfolio of their skills, achievements and notes on work experience in MyCareersRoom, which is available up to age 24

Optional extras:

  • Cambridge Profile aptitude tests can be integrated into the EirQuest workbook. (COA's Cambridge Profile Aptitude tests are on the Irish Government's Approved Aptitude Test list.)

Seven years ago I began using the Cambridge Profile Aptitude Tests and EirQuest career questionnaire with Transition Year students. I find these instruments very user-friendly and accessible. They are of great benefit to the students as they finalise their subject choice for the Leaving Certificate Examination. The Cambridge Profile Aptitude Tests and EirQuest introduce the students to the world of work and further education. They also enable students to identify and explore possible future careers and consequently the routes to those careers. Like many other guidance practitioners, I have had a very positive experience of the COA instruments and the efficient manner that COA staff manage our testing. I believe that as these instruments match the individual combinations of skills, interests and ability they prove to be a valuable resource for both guidance counsellor and student. I have no hesitation in recommending the use of COA's range of instruments.

We have been using EirQuest & Cambridge Profile for a number of years now and have always had very positive feedback from students and parents. It is extremely useful in helping students to identify the appropriate range of subjects to choose for their Leaving Certificate. Students are directed in an informed manner and can understand their stronger and weaker aptitudes. It also gives a precise and clear picture to parents which they find helpful in understanding their son or daughter's subject choice process.
